Time-of-Flight Diffraction (TOFD) for precise flaw sizing

TOFD measures the time-of-flight of ultrasonic waves diffracted at flaw tips, enabling especially precise determination of flaw size — often used in combination with PAUT. This highly efficient ultrasonic testing method is ideally suited for the detailed assessment of welds and thick-walled components.

Key features and benefits:

  • Precise flaw sizing on welds: Accurate measurement of the extent, height and position of internal inhomogeneities, independent of sound reflection.
  • Frequently combined with PAUT: A valuable complement to phased array ultrasonic testing for complete, gapless volumetric coverage.
  • Suited to thick-walled components: Reliable inspection even on massive industrial cross-sections requiring high penetration or inspection depth.
